Abstract
Aim: We conducted this study in order to compare the ability of intravenous omeprazole and oral lansoprazole in treatment of patients with bleeding peptic ulcers following endoscopic hemostasis. We therefore conducted the pilot prospective randomized study to assess whether oral lansoprazole could improve the efficacy of intravenous omeprazole as an adjunct treatment following endoscopic hemostasis for bleeding ulcers.

Methods: Patients with active bleeding ulcer or ulcer with major sign of recent bleeding were treated with endoscopic hemostasis. After hemostasis was achieved, they were randomly assigned to receive intravenous omeprazole or oral lansoprazole.

Results: Thirteen patients were enrolled in this prospective trial. bleeding recurred in 1 patients (13%) in the intravenous omeprazole group, as compared with 1 patients (20%) in the oral lansoprazole group. The rebleeding rate was not high in the intravenous omeprazole group, but there was no statistically significant differences.

Conclusion: Intravenous omeprazole is not superior to oral lansoprazole as an adjunct treatment to endoscopic hemostasis in patients with bleeding peptic ulcers.
